Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick

The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, is one of the seven sacraments of the church, specially intended to strengthen those who are seriously ill or are experiencing the weakness if old age. This sacred anointing of the sick was instituted by Christ our Lord as a true and proper sacrament of the New Testament. It is alluded to indeed by Mark, but is recommended to the faithful and promulgated by James the apostle and brother of the Lord.

“Is anyone among you sick?,  Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. (James 5:14).”

 The Sacrament has great effects for those who receive it and the graces this sacrament brings is tremendous. Apart from the restoration of health, it also unites the sick person to the passion of Christ and brings salvation to his/her soul.”

If a sick person who received this anointing recovers his/her health. They can in the case of another grave illness receive this sacrament again. If during the same illness the person’s condition becomes more serious, the sacrament may be repeated. It is fitting to receive the Anointing of the Sick just prior to a serious operation. The same holds for the elderly whose frailty becomes more pronounced.

If it is an emergency please be sure to indicate that when calling the office. So proper attention and expediency is given to your request.

The anointing can be done;

  • at the office;
  • before or after Mass (weekday and weekend);
  • in your home, or
  • at the hospital.
